Herman Howard Davis, 89, of Fontana, California, passed away on January 8, 2022 in Fontana, California.
Herman was born on July 26, 1932, and raised by his mother, Velma Swearingen and his grandparents William Walter Swearingen and Anna Dora Swearingen “the kid” in Erick, Oklahoma. From an early age he helped his family picking cotton and vegetables on their farm in Oklahoma.
He came to Imperial Valley, California when he was 11. He worked with a surveyor in Imperial Valley and his family doing agricultural work. Herman was a member of the Boy Scouts in Westmoreland.
He was drafted into the United States Army on November 16, 1952, and served in the Korean War as a heavy machine gunner and transferred to the Army Reserves in November 1954 until he was honorably discharged on January 31, 1961 as a Private First Class. After serving the military, he worked with a surveyor looking for minerals in the Imperial Valley.
In 1965 Dorothy, Betty’s sister-in-law, played match maker and at a home New Year’s Eve party invited both Betty and Herman to come on a date. They married on June 3, 1967, in Westmoreland, California and went on to have 2 children, Robin (Paul) Jacome of Redlands, California and Glen Davis of Indio, California.
He worked with medal as a burner (welder) at Kaiser Fabricating (Ameron) in Fontana, California. He worked on a steel project with NASA. In December 1994, Herman retired and spent his time walking around the neighborhood, attending all his grandchildren’s baseball, football, soccer, softball games, and Boy Scouts activities.
Herman was predeceased in death by his grandparents, mother, two siblings and one grandchild, as well as numerous other family members. He is survived by his wife, Betty, his two children, Robin (Paul) and Glen and one sister, Sharon (Porter) Wells, 6 grandchildren (Justin, Julia, Gavin, Jacob, Sean, Conor) and 1 great grandchild (Atlas).
A (celebration of life) will be on February 10, 2022, from 6-8 pm, at Mortuary. Graveside Services will be held at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Cemetery in Colton, California on February 11 at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to [cause], an organization [name] felt strongly about.
